Qld: CEOs expect Queensland to lead economic recovery

By Tony Bartlett

BRISBANE, Feb 5 AAP - Queensland's CEOs expect the state to lead Australia's economic recovery.

But they think there are dark days ahead over the next 12 months.

A survey of 70 Queensland business leaders by the CEO Institute shows 88 per cent don't
expect an improvement in economic conditions before 2010.

None expect things to get better in the next three months.

And only 10 per cent think they'll turn the corner by mid-year.

Institute chief Sue Forrester said the survey late last month showed no …

25 January 2011 - Spanish IT firm Indra (MCE:IDR) will close 2010 with a net profit of EUR189m (USD257.9m), down 3.3% year-on-year, the company's preliminary results submitted with the national stock market regulator CNMV showed yesterday.
The drop is explained with a series of extraordinary costs.

Sales are expected to rise by 2% on the year to EUR2.557bn. Sales in Spain are seen to lose 3%, while those abroad will gain 10%.

The recurring earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margin is expected to stand at 11.2%.

In 2011 Indra hopes to book more than 2% rise in its sales.

FED:Bligh supports gay marriage

SYDNEY, Dec 2 AAP - The Australian Labor party must change its platform on gay marriage,
says Queensland Premier Anna Bligh says.

At the party's national conference in Sydney on Saturday, debate will turn to the issue
of changing the federal Marriage Act to allow same-sex couples to wed.

"I think people who are at the conference have been thinking about this for some time,"

Queensland Premier Anna Bligh told Sky News.

She said the party's platform should be amended in support of same-sex marriage.

"I'll be supporting a change to the platform in the same way I supported the legislation
that went through the Queensland parliament (on Wednesday night)," Ms Bligh said.

"For me, this is as simple as two people who love each other.

"If they want to have a ceremony to celebrate that with their friends and their family,
and they want that to be legally recognised as a relationship, then I think that is a
very reasonable thing to want in life.

She added she would support a conscience vote on the issue.

"Having given it to my own MPs, I wouldn't want to be in a position of denying it to
others," she said.

Labor's left wing supports the push for gay marriage, while Prime Minister Julia Gillard
and most of the party's Right faction opposes any change to the Marriage Act that would
allow same-sex couples to marry.

Ms Gillard is backing a conscience vote on the issue.

ACT Deputy Chief Minister Andrew Barr, who is in a same-sex civil partnership, will
on Saturday move a motion for Labor to change its platform and amend the Marriage Act
to allow equal access to marriage for all couples, regardless of gender.

NSW: Bus drivers to continue with 24-hour strike

NSW: Bus drivers to continue with 24-hour strike

By Adam Bennett

SYDNEY, Dec 17 AAP - Bus drivers are poised to ignore the industrial watchdog's calls
to abort a 24-hour strike on Friday, potentially leaving 600,000 commuters stranded across
Sydney and Newcastle.

The Rail Tram and Bus Union (RTBU) called the snap strike of Sydney and Newcastle bus
drivers on Thursday, citing a breakdown in award negotiations between drivers and the
NSW government three weeks earlier.

Despite the NSW Industrial Relations Commission's (IRC) recommendation that it call
off the strike, the union says it will go ahead unless drivers agree to consider a last
minute pay offer from the government.

Under the deal discussed in the IRC on Thursday, drivers could be in line for a three
per cent pay rise this financial year and next.

But a push to have casual drivers cover part-time bus driver absences could be a sticking
point for the union, which had rejected the government's original 2.5 per cent pay offer.

However, a budget sub-committee has yet to approve the pay increase flagged in the
IRC by the government. The sub-committee will meet at 11am (AEDT) on Friday to discuss
the offer.

RTBU representative Raul Baonza said there was no guarantee it would be approved at
the meeting, but a member vote would be held later on Thursday to decide if the offer
was acceptable.

If not, buses will grind to a halt from 4am (AEDT) on Friday.

Mr Baonza called on Transport Minister David Campbell or Premier Kristina Keneally
to "break the impasse" in negotiations.

"I haven't heard one word from the minister. Somebody has to take responsibility for
breaking the impasse, one way or the other," he said.

Mr Campbell called on the union to abide by the IRC's recommendations.

"State Transit is the agency negotiating this agreement with the RTBU and the government
expects State Transit to abide by the recommendations of the IRC," Mr Campbell said.

"The government also expects the RTBU to abide by the recommendations, so that negotiations
can continue in good faith."

The NSW opposition labelled the snap strike an act of Christmas bastardry, saying it
provided a crucial first test for "novice" premier Ms Keneally just seven days out from
Christmas.

"This is an act of bastardry by the bus union - they're the Christmas Grinches," Opposition
Leader Barry O'Farrell told reporters in Sydney.

"This is a double hit, it's not just to commuters trying to get to work, but it is
also going to affect businesses."

Mr O'Farrell called on Ms Keneally, who held a four-hour caucus meeting on Thursday,
to "stare down" the union.

Sydney's business lobby also reacted angrily to news of the strike, saying it would
be a major disruption at the busiest time of year.

"It should be seen for what it is - a miserable act designed to deliberately inconvenience
businesses, workers and shoppers at Christmas," NSW Business Chamber chief executive Stephen
Cartwright said.

Mr Baonza apologised to commuters for striking seven days before Christmas, but said
the union had "nowhere else to go".

He said drivers had put off industrial action until after the school term so as not
to inconvenience HSC students.

However, asked why drivers couldn't wait until after Christmas to walk off the job,
he said "it's never a good day to go on strike".

State transit bus tickets will be recognised on CityRail train services throughout
the strike, if it proceeds.

Western Sydney bus services on the Liverpool Parramatta Transitway will not be affected.

Qld: Upper house the answer to Qld integrity problems: Macdonald

BRISBANE, Aug 9 AAP - Queensland Liberal senator Ian Macdonald has added to the growing
number of calls for an upper house to be reinstated to the state's parliament, in the
wake of cronyism and corruption claims.

Premier Anna Bligh last week released a green paper for discussion on accountability
issues such as political donations, the funding of election campaigns, and the work of
lobbyists.

It came amidst a flood of accusations about links between former politicians turned
lobbyists and government decisions, and criticism from corruption reformer Tony Fitzgerald.

Senator Macdonald said he had written to Ms Bligh, to add to the public debate the
issue of restoring an upper house or second chamber in Queensland.

"Upper houses have demonstrated abilities to increase scrutiny of government decisions
and effectively voice popular disagreement," he said in a statement.

In the letter, Senator Macdonald says he envisages an upper house with limited powers,
so it cannot hold up legislation indefinitely or have the power to bring down a government,
but can delay or amend legislation.

"By placing the aforementioned restrictions on an upper house, its focus could remain
on thoroughly scrutinising the decisions of government and voicing popular disagreement
when it arises," he wrote.

Queensland's upper house was abolished in 1922.

Fed: Greenpeace welcomes armed cruise ship into whale crusade

CANBERRA, Dec 18 AAP - Greenpeace has welcomed a report that Australia will use an
armed P&O cruise ship to watch over Japanese whalers in the Southern Ocean this summer.

High-level talks have centred around leasing the Oceanic Viking, a commercial vessel
with a reinforced hull to tackle ice, a crew trained for polar conditions and surveillance
equipment, Fairfax reports today, citing anonymous sources.

"We're certainly supporting the Australian government's action that they're taking
in sending a ship down," Greenpeace's Karli Thomas told the Nine Network.

"The more scrutiny that we can have on the Japanese whaling operation the better."

Ms Thomas said Greenpeace's main aim was to disprove Japanese assertions that the hunt
is part of scientific research.

"It's commercial hunting," she said.

While welcoming the reported plan, Ms Thomas said it was not enough.

"This year in particular the Japanese government is starting to feel the heat," she said.

"There's been a very high level of international condemnation of the hunt and they're
only just reaching the Southern Ocean now."

Fed: Labor threat to future prosperity: Loughnane

CANBERRA, Aug 6 AAP - State government debt demonstrates that a federal Labor government
would be a threat to Australia's prosperity, the Liberal Party's federal director Brian
Loughnane says.

The federal government is blaming Labor for putting upward pressure on interest rates
by racking up too much debt, ahead of this week's anticipated interest rate rise.

The attack on the states is part of a broader strategy produced by the coalition's
internal pollster Crosby/Textor in order to reverse dwindling government support ahead
of the election.

The dossier advises the government to paint the states as ineffective but Mr Loughnane
said state debt was a real concern.

"It's not commonly known but the level of state government debt is already up above
$70 billion ... that is a significant pressure on interest rates," Mr Loughnane told
ABC radio.

"It's a significant pressure on the future prosperity of the Australian economy so
we believe it is an important factor.

"It will be an important factor in the coming election and I think it's a clear contrast
between the two parties."

The confidential dossier paints a damning critique of Mr Howard as old and dishonest,
advising the government to highlight Mr Rudd's inexperience.

But Mr Loughnane, borrowing a line from former US President Ronald Reagan, said it
was not the government's intention to focus on Mr Rudd.

"It's not our intention to make Mr Rudd's youth and inexperience an issue at this stage,"

he said.

"I think that John Howard is the most experienced political figure in Australia."

In 1984, the then 73-year-old Reagan brushed aside barbs about his age by jokingly
promising not to "exploit for political purposes my opponent's youth and inexperience".

Waving U.S. and Mexican flags, hundreds of high school students descended on the Colorado Capitol Wednesday for a rally in support of illegal immigrants.

About 2,500 marchers jammed Denver's Speer Boulevard on Wednesday morning and temporarily blocked other intersections as they headed toward the Capitol, but no major problems were reported, police spokeswoman Virginia Quinones said.

"We are not trying to hurt your country," said Jorge Macias, a high school sophomore who said he is a U.S. citizen. "It is big enough for everyone."

The march was the latest in a string of rallies that have drawn tens of thousands of demonstrators across the country as Congress considers immigration reforms. Many of the demonstrators have said they want more immigrant-friendly policies and oppose a measure that would make it a felony to enter the country illegally.

Police said the Denver students had obtained a permit for the rally. Arvizu Derr, 17, who helped organize the event, said students at a number of area high schools helped promote it through mobile-phone text messages, Internet posts and fliers.

Denver Public Schools officials were not as enthusiastic about the demonstration.

Schools spokesman Mark Stevens said principals and teachers had discouraged students from participating and that absences would be considered unexcused. Any discipline will be handled on a student-by-student basis, he said.

Gov. Bill Owens, who was not at the Capitol during the march, said he believes the students are sincere but noted their demonstration was in the middle of a school day.

"I'd be much more impressed if I saw these students out marching on a Saturday," Owens said.

Vic: Victorian crane drivers to defy death threats

MELBOURNE, April 12 AAP - Victorian crane drivers today decided to carry on working
despite threats they would be shot unless a $50 million ransom was paid.

In the second threat in two months, extortionists demanded construction giant Multiplex
pay the ransom or crane drivers in Australia or the United Kingdom would be killed.

NSW police and senior Multiplex management briefed Victorian crane drivers on the threat
today and the drivers then met to decide whether to walk off the job before the April
18 deadline given in the extortion demand.

The Victorian secretary of the crane drivers' union Tommy Watson said police had told
the drivers they were looking at "several people of interest" in NSW in relation to the
threats.

Police had given details of the threats to the drivers who then voted to carry on working
past the April 18 deadline.

"Our members are concerned. They've got families, they've got kids the same as everyone
else," Mr Watson said.

"But at the end of the day you've got to make a decision - do you make a stand or don't you."

Mr Watson said some crane drivers were worried about the threats and some would be
nervous when they climbed up into their cranes on Monday morning.

"Some of them will be fairly nervous," he said.

"We have an agreement with Multiplex, if some of our members are concerned, then those
individual members will be counselled."

Mr Watson said it would be difficult to modify cranes to protect drivers from a sniper.

"All you could do is put bullet proof glass in the window, but on sunny days they have
windows open and doors open and they've still got to walk up and down the crane to get
there," he said.

Mr Watson said Victorian crane drivers had decided they wanted to get on with work
as normal without any extra security.

The threat covered all crane drivers and was not limited to Multiplex workers, he said.

pander

pander The verb pander means to cater to, or profit by, the vices of others. But for centuries it meant to act as a go-between in clandestine love affairs.

Pandaro was a character in Boccaccio's Filostrato. He was the cousin of Cressida and, living up to his unsavory reputation, acted as go-between in her affair with Troilus. Chaucer took him over in his Troilus and Criseyde as Pandarus, changing him from cousin to uncle but retaining his unsavory role. His name came to be used as a generic term for “an arranger of sexual liaisons.” In each instance Pandaro or Pandare obtained Cressida's favors for the pleasure of Troilus, son of the king of Troy. But the match did not last long. Cressida deserted her lover for a Greek. Shakespeare through Pandarus intoned: “Since I have such pains to bring you together, let all pitiful goers-between be call'd to the world's end after my name; call them all Pandars.”

The sense of pander in today's contemporary usage is to appeal to someone's lower tastes or lower nature. It might be said of anyone who gains power and popularity by arousing the emotions and prejudices of people. Such a person might also be called a demagogue.

A chip is worth 240 voices.(VxTel's VxTel VX-SP1000 voice-signal processor)(Product Announcement)

THE VX-SP1000 VOICE-SIGNAL processor from VxTel targets carrier-class switches in next-generation packet networks. The device can process as many as 240 G.711 uncompressed channels or 120 G.729A compressed channels, each with 64-msec-tail-length echo cancellation and supporting telephony functions, such as comfort-noise generation, voice-activity detection, and dual-tone-multifrequency tone detection and generation. The VX-SP1000 uses four DSP cores for voice, fax, and other broadband-processing algorithms and integrates a [micro]law/A-law PCM-highway interface with 512 full-duplex, independent, time-division-multiplexed channels. Additional on-chip resources include the 32-bit VX-bus expansion-bus interface), 8 Mbits of memory, and JATG/enhanced-JTAG test ports. I/O voltages are 3.3V, and core inputs are 1.8V.

You can configure the programmable, scalable architecture for various applications and software upgrades. Each channel on the processor can support any of various codecs, including G.711, G.729A, G.723.1, G.726, and fax. Such flexibility comes into play in determining how many channels a chip can support. For example, certain codecs offer higher voice quality but require more processing resources, reducing the number of channels a chip can support. Additionally, a school of thought challenges compressing voice for packet networks. Although voice-over-Internet Protocol applications are on the rise, voice is becoming an increasingly smaller percentage of overall network traffic. The effective gains of compressing a small percentage of traffic may not be worth the processing cost; consider that the VX-SP1000 can process twice as many uncompressed channels as compressed. Designing with dynamic algorithm allocation on a per-channel leaves the door open to future cost reductions via software upgrades alone.

Finnish Internet consulting house Nixu Ltd. will be planning and launching technologically high-quality Internet services in Saudi Arabia. Nixu Ltd. has concluded a three-year project agreement with the King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The total value of the project is approximately $6,5 million.

During the project, Nixu will launch a maintenance centre for the Saudi Arabian backbone network in the capital city of the Saudi Arabia, Riyadh. The centre will enable establishment of the necessary international connections, domain name service for Saudi-Arabia's sa domain and other functions of the backbone network. Once the services have been set up, Nixu will take care of the backbone network maintenance. At the same time, Nixu will train local staff who will be responsible for these tasks once the project is over.

KACST is a Saudi-Arabian science and technology centre monitored by the committee led by the King. KACST promotes and supports scientific research and coordinates the activities of research institutes that specialise in different fields. The task of KACST is to build and develop the infrastructure required by research institutes, including establishing a data communications network and granting funds for scientific research. KACST also monitors research institutes subordinate to it in the fields of solar energy, astronomy and geophysics, space research, petrochemistry, nuclear energy, environmental studies and natural resources, information technology and electronics.

"Saudi Arabia has only recently cancelled prohibitions and restrictions concerning the use of the Internet, and legislation now permits the establishment of companies providing Internet services. The project to be launched will make the Internet available all over the country while taking its unique national requirements into account. A filter mechanism preventing connections to sources which are immoral or religiously or socially undesirable will be built in the system," says Nixu Ltd. Managing Director, Oiva Karppinen.

The services of the Internet backbone network will also be utilised by local Internet service provider companies which offer both permanent connections and connection via telephone networks for both private individuals and companies. KACST grants licences for service provider companies. Seventy companies have already applied for licence.

Small Company Beat Big Corporations

Several large international teleoperators, computer companies and consulting companies contended for the project. "The customer felt that our offer was technologically superior. We are pleased with the recognition. This project will be a very important future reference for all our activities," says Oiva Karppinen.

Nixu has established an office in Riyadh for the Saudi Arabian project. Ten Nixu staff members are presently working in the project, most of them at the Riyadh office in cooperation with Saudi Arabian partners. The project breaks new ground for Nixu Ltd. The company is seeking new employees who are experts in the field of Internet technology.

"We have sound expertise coupled with good experience in planning and launching high-quality technology Internet services in collaboration with Sonera (former Telecom Finland). Several companies specialising in information technology and network security are our customers and partners, for example, Nokia, DataFellows, SSH Communication Security and Ericsson," says Karppinen.

"While preparing this project, it has become evident that Finland has a good reputation as an expert in information technology. This also influenced the decision of the subscriber," says Karppinen.

The value of the concluded agreement has remarkable effect on Nixu's growth for this and coming years. "We have taken great care in preparing the project and received invaluable support and expert opinions from many individuals and communities," says Karppinen. "Nixu has received valuable advice and support from Finnish Foreign Trade Association, Finnish Guarantee Board and also from German university consultants, who helped KACST to design the project."

Nixu is an Independent Consulting Company

Nixu Ltd., an independent consulting company, was established in 1988, and its staff holds the majority of shares. The company specialises in Internet technology and network security. Nixu both plans and launches practical solutions for communication network services for teleoperators, data communication suppliers, and organisations specialising in other fields.

"We create solutions that provide safe remote work connections, extranet solutions that serve company's customers and partners, and intranet solutions for large companies", Oiva Karppinen explains. The company also provides Internet and Unix support services.

"We have versatile and extensive knowledge in network security. We build TCP/IP firewalls and encrypting systems, conduct surveys to determine the customers' data networks, and plan and launch required network security systems. Companies may order the services of our Tiger Team, which carries out attacks in order to check the security of their network systems."

Nixu's specialty is information system integration. "One of our integration solutions is our own invoicing system, which is connected to the ePostLetter server of the post office via e-mail. We send invoicing message internally via e-mail to our ePostLetter server, which sends them to the post office ePostLetter system. The post office then prints them out to be sent to the customer in the form of a letter," explains Karppinen.

Harris Corporation Receives $9.4 Million Order From U.S. Air Force to Supply Falcon III AN/PRC-117G Multiband Manpack Radios.

MELBOURNE, Fla. and ROCHESTER, N.Y., June 20, 2011 /PRNewswire/ --

Highlights:

* Providing additional AN/PRC-117G radios to U.S. Air Force to provide wideband tactical communications capabilities.

* Radios are part of Air Force transition to a networked digital battlefield that delivers voice and high-bandwidth data capabilities to forces at the tactical edge.

* Improved interoperability provides enhanced coordination and mission planning, while reducing risk of friendly fire.

Harris Corporation (NYSE: HRS), an international communications and information technology company, has received a $9.4 million order from the U.S. Air Force for additional Falcon III AN/PRC-117G multiband manpack radio systems. The Air Force is acquiring the AN/PRC-117G in support of emerging applications in situational awareness, intelligence and analysis and real-time battlefield collaboration.

The field-proven AN/PRC-117G will provide Air Force personnel with unprecedented situational awareness through wideband networking of the battlefield. The software-defined, upgradeable AN/PRC-117G delivers critical real-time information to warfighters on the move and their commanders via a man-portable radio system with significantly reduced size and weight. The AN/PRC-117G platform enables a growing number of network-enabled missions such as intelligence reporting and analysis, collaborative chat, route planning, MEDEVAC, convoy tracking and checkpoint biometrics.

The AN/PRC-117G is the first JTRS Software Communications Architecture-certified and NSA Type-1 certified wideband manpack radio system. With its fully integrated and NSA-certified High Assurance Internet Protocol Equipment (HAIPE) networking encryption, the AN/PRC-117G provides the highest level of information assurance to tactical units.

"Widely deployed by all branches of the Department of Defense, the Falcon III AN/PRC-117G is providing the DoD with the battlefield networking solution it needs for the current challenges of warfare," said Brendan O'Connell, president, Department of Defense business, Harris RF Communications. "Successfully fielded across Operation Enduring Freedom, the AN/PRC-117G addresses the full range of networking capabilities while enabling the mission-critical requirements of the future."

The Falcon III AN/PRC-117G and other Falcon III radios have been adopted by the U.S. Department of Defense, federal agencies and key allies such as the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, other NATO countries and Australia. In 2010, C4ISR Journal named the AN/PRC-117G as a Big 25 award winner in the category of network systems, recognizing the technology for having "a significant impact in defeating terrorists, preventing attacks, and enabling troops to make the right decisions on the battlefield."

The development of the AN/PRC-117G manpack radio has followed the U.S. Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS) program's Enterprise Business Model (EBM). The EBM encourages companies to develop next-generation solutions in tactical communications using their own investment capital. In doing so, the EBM encourages competition, increases innovation, reduces costs and speeds development of important capabilities.

Harris RF Communications is the leading global supplier of secure radio communications and embedded high-grade encryption solutions for military, government and commercial organizations. The company's Falcon family of software-defined tactical radio systems encompasses manpack, handheld and vehicular applications. Falcon III is the next generation of radios supporting the U.S. military's Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS) requirements, as well as network-centric operations worldwide. Harris RF Communications is also a leading supplier of assured communications systems and equipment for public safety, utility and transportation markets - with products ranging from the most advanced IP voice and data networks to portable and mobile single- and multiband radios.

USDA PROPOSES TO MOVE LISTS OF REGIONS WITH ANIMAL DISEASES, STATES RECEIVING IMPORTED HORSES TO WEB SITE.

WASHINGTON -- The following information was released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture:

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) today published a proposed rule that would move the Agency's list of regions affected by certain animal diseases from its import regulations to the APHIS website. The proposal would make the same change to the list of states approved to receive horses from countries affected by contagious equine metritis (CEM).

APHIS is proposing these actions to be able to respond more quickly to changes in disease status. Currently, the Agency must go through the full rulemaking process to recognize changes in a region's animal disease status or the lists of states approved to receive horses from CEM affected countries. Under the proposal, APHIS would continue to base its disease status decisions or State approval on the same technical criteria as the current system, but would make changes to its status lists using a notice-based process, rather than rulemaking. APHIS would add a region or state to its status lists only after completing an evaluation and announcing its availability for public comment through a notice in the Federal Register.

The Agency regulations would provide the Web addresses for the lists, explain APHIS' criteria for adding or removing a region or state to or from the lists, and establish the notice-based process, in place of rulemaking, for amending the lists.

This proposed rule is published in today's June 1, 2011, Federal Register.

We will consider all comments that we receive on or before August 1, 2011. You may submit comments by either of the following methods:

Mark Lackey and Anne Lackey with Atlanta Housing Source at Solid Source Realty Win Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce's 2011 Pinnacle Award.

Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) May 13, 2011

Atlanta Housing Source at Solid Source Realty was started in 2005 by Mark Lackey and Anne Lackey. In 2010, despite the very slow real estate market, Atlanta Housing Source grew by an amazing 78.5%. Mark Lackey attributes this growth to his company's ideal of approaching their business with a "servant's heart." Mark and Anne are reaching their business goals by helping others solve what might seem to be an insurmountable obstacle in today's marketagetting their house sold, even though they owe more on the house than its current value.

According to Gwinnett Chamber President & CEO, Jim Maran, the winners of the Chamber's 2011 Pinnacle Award are "risk-takers, innovators, and givers." Mark and Anne Lackey exhibit all three of these attributes. Mark and Anne's company lists and sells residential real estate in Metro Atlanta, including Gwinnett, Forsyth, Fulton, Cobb, Dekalb, and Hall counties, as well as in surrounding counties.

When asked why his company saw extraordinary growth in 2010 during such a down market, Mark Lackey says it is because compassion is firmly rooted at the heart of their business. Many of Atlanta Housing Source's clients have suffered from financial hardships over the course of the past two years, including the threat of foreclosure. By structuring their business to actually solve their clients' financial problems through innovative ways of selling houses, such as short sales, the Lackeys are able to help their clients "move forward with their lives with a burden removed."

In addition to helping sellers who are underwater on their mortgages, the Lackeys have a dynamic marketing plan for anyone who wants to sell, despite the lagging market conditions. "We've really embraced technology," says Mark. Last year we totally revamped our website. "This year we're using Internet marketing methods more and more to get exposure for our sellers and also to find buyers." The Lackeys have a team of six buyers' agents who work in virtually every geographic area in metro Atlanta.

A short sale is a real estate transaction where the lender agrees to accept a mortgage pay off that is actually lower than the stated amount owed on the mortgage. "Many of our clients bought at or near the top of the real estate market," Mark says. "When the housing crunch came, they saw the values of their homes drop by as much as 25%." With small down payments and high loan-to-value mortgages, many people found themselves unable to sell for enough to pay off their loans.

"In the past, when something unfortunate like a job loss occurred, people would just sell their house, and use the equity to straighten things out," says Mark. "Unfortunately, over the past two years, we have seen housing prices drop, not grow. If you bought your house within the past three or so years, there's no equity to use to solve your financial problem."

Of course, with the housing crisis came rampant job loss. A lot of people who bought houses found themselves with only one income, or even with no income. Yet, the "normal" solution of just selling the house and starting over is often no longer possible. This is where Atlanta Housing Source's team steps in.

"We created a team of professionals to find solutions for these individuals in need," says Anne Lackey, Mark's wife and partner in the business. "We have an attorney and also licensed loan originators who specialize in helping us help sellers who are struggling." The Lackey's team intimately understands the loan origination and banking process to the point that they can often get mortgage holders to lower the pay off on a mortgage down to the point where the house can get sold. "This is a win-win-win," says Mark. "The bank wins because they get a potential bad loan off the books. The seller wins because they get to start over financially. And we win because we're able to help yet another homeowner navigate a complex and potentially financially devastating situation."

Atlanta Housing Source at Solid Source Realty is owned and operated by Mark Lackey and Anne Lackey. Between them, they have over 20 years experience working in the real estate industry. Atlanta Housing Source is a full-service, residential real estate team at Solid Source Realty, Inc. They help both buyers and sellers achieve their personal and financial goals via residential real estate. Atlanta Housing Source at Solid Source Realty serves the entire Atlanta area. They can give you up to the minute information about homes for sale in Gwinnett County, along with homes for sale in the whole metro area.

Bulls lose as Curry stews.

Byline: K.C. Johnson

ATLANTA _ The Chicago Bulls faded down the stretch again Wednesday night to lose their fifth straight game, but of more pressing concern is whether Eddy Curry has lost his confidence completely.

The third-year center insists he is mentally surviving his rocky season. His body language and second straight lackluster performance in a 97-87 loss to Atlanta at Philips Arena, howevre, suggests otherwise.

Deuces were wild in Curry's line of two points, two rebounds and two turnovers in only 12 minutes. He didn't play again after getting removed as part of coach Scott Skiles' four-man substitution early in the third quarter.

"We were flat until we went to the second-unit guys," Skiles said. "(They) gave us life. It was in shocking contrast to the initial group."

Curry's performance even had former Bull Charles Oakley wondering_like so many Chicago fans_how long the Bulls can continue to center their rebuilding effort around him. General manager John Paxson said on Tuesday that he wouldn't panic with Curry, but management's patience also is less bountiful than it once was.

"Eddy has to get tougher," said Oakley, who sat next to the Bulls' bench with tickets from Tyson Chandler. "But you bought the car, so you have to ride the car."

Curry said he is battling a sore back and spent time before the game getting treatment.

"It's tough but I'm trying to stay up," Curry said. "I still have confidence. I don't know what I'm doing to keep it but I still have it."

Still, Curry has been telling friends he has wondered what it would be like to play outside his hometown.

"I think in the long run, (playing in Chicago) is going to be a good thing for me," Curry said.

Skiles' four-man substitution proved a good thing as Rick Brunson, Kendall Gill, Marcus Fizer and Corie Blount replaced all the starters but Ronald Dupree, who had left for Eddie Robinson two minutes earlier.

That group played from the 8-minute 25-second mark of the third quarter until 9:17 was left in the fourth, using full-court pressure to trim a 10-point deficit to 81-79.

But the Bulls didn't score in the final 3:35, surrendering an 11-0 run to end the game. Atlanta's Shareef Abdur-Rahim, who tied Stephen Jackson for game-high honors with 22 points, scored eight points in the run.

Robinson and Gill led the Bulls with 17.

Robinson hadn't played in back-to-back games, and Skiles called his having to leave at the 3:35 mark a turning point down the stretch. Robinson tweaked his groin on a fast-break dunk.

Like Curry, Jamal Crawford didn't play the final 20:25.

"We made a couple of mistakes, but that happens," Crawford said. "The second unit played well."

The loss capped a disastrous 0-2 trip to Eastern Conference bottom feeders. The Bulls lead only Orlando in the standings.

"I'm concerned about the whole group's psyche when we continue to cough up leads," Skiles said. "That can be really damaging to a team."

TIPS FOR AVOIDING COMMON SCAMS AND SHAMS.(MoneyWise)

Byline: Mary Hunt

Every day it seems that some new scam or rip-off appears by mail, cyberspace, the telephone or even in your favorite restaurant. While there's no way to guarantee you'll never be victimized by a sinister ploy, you can reduce the chances greatly if you just stay aware and keep informed.

* The restaurant rip-off: The waiter brings your bill and you pay with plastic. You enter an amount for the tip, add up the total and sign where indicated, taking your copy of the receipt. Your statement arrives and you do a quick rundown. You remember the meal, and the amount looks right. You pay the statement, completely unaware that the waiter changed the tip amount after you left, figuring you wouldn't notice the addition of a dollar or more.

Response: Keep your receipts and check them against your credit card statements online or in the mail. If there are any overcharges, contact the management at the restaurant immediately. Notify the credit card company, too. Yes, even if it's only a dollar. Better yet, pay cash.

* Impostor e-mail: It looks just like an e-mail from an Internet merchant like eBay, PayPal, MSN or Earthlink. The message explains that you need to update your personal and private information. You're suspicious, so you click on the corporate logo to make sure this is legitimate. It must be OK because it takes you to the corporate site. You complete the information and hit "send." In the seconds it takes to return the form, your personal information has slipped into the hands of an identity thief who's not only stolen your information but also the information from the company it pretends to represent. It's called "phishing" and it's a two-stage scam. First the thugs steal the company's identity, and then use it to victimize consumers by stealing their credit identities.

Response: Never reply to an e-mail from anyone asking you to reveal personal information. Be particularly wary of those that urge you to click on a link to a Web page to verify. Criminals can easily replicate links that appear to be harmless. If there are account problems, you should call the company or open a new browser window and type the company's address yourself.

* Check in the mail: We all get checks in the mail from time to time. It might be a $2 rebate for light bulbs or an insurance refund. Sometimes it's expected, but more likely it's a surprise. And we're not stupid. We know the difference between a phony check that's really an advertisement and the real thing. Real checks are on real bank paper with real signatures. We can tell. However, distinguishing a real check from a phony is no longer good enough. New, sneaky marketing ploys have real checks showing up in our mailboxes. If you are diligent and have a pretty decent magnifying glass, you'll discover that endorsing the check means you've accepted a membership to some club with a high annual fee or you've just accepted a loan with outrageous terms.

Response: Question everything, especially the fine print. Never cash a check that you cannot identify as legitimate. And get a shredder.
