NSW: Archibald entries begin coming in

SYDNEY, Feb 12 AAP - A portrait of A Current Affair host Tracey Grimshaw was among
the first entries to arrive at the NSW Art Gallery today for judging in this year's Archibald
Prize.

The painting of the Nine Network journalist by Nidal Qumsieh will be joined by hundreds
of other entries in the coming week before the close of entries in the Archibald, Wynne
and Sulman prizes at 4pm (AEDT) on Friday.

The winners of this year's prizes will be announced on Friday, March 2.

The famous Packing Room Prize for the Archibald - supposedly the choice of art gallery
staff but for which head storeman Steve Peters holds 51 per cent of the vote - will be
announced on February 23.

The $35,000 Archibald Prize goes to the painting or "mixed media" artwork judged to
be the best Australasian portrait of a man or woman "preferentially distinguished in art,
letters, science or politics".

The $15,000 Wynne Prize is awarded for the best Australian landscape painting while
the $10,000 Sir John Sulman Prize is given to the best "genre painting representing ...

everyday life".
