DENVER -- Elaine Cheris has been bumped and bruised during her 20-year fencing career, but nothing has hurt as badly as recent rumors that paint her as a cheater.
Cheris, a 50-year-old who runs a fencing school in Denver, is headed for the Olympics with a cloud over her head. A Ukrainian fencer says a coach offered her $500 to lose a match to Cheris, according to a story Tuesday in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The coach who allegedly offered the bribe is a good friend of Cheris' coach, Janusz Peciak.
